Swimming with Turtles for Beginners and Non-Swimmers

Turtle snorkeling in Puerto Rico as a beginner, a weak swimmer or with children: San Juan tours that need no swimming, life vests, the jet snorkel and ages.

Updated October 2026

You do not need to be a strong swimmer to see a sea turtle in Puerto Rico. In San Juan, Try Scuba Diving’s beginner snorkel at Escambrón asks only that you are comfortable in the water, Jet Snorkel’s underwater jet does the swimming for you, and the shore snorkels lend life vests. A few tours are for swimmers only, and every one has a minimum age, so match the tour to the weakest swimmer in your group. The beginner snorkel costs from $59 a person (checked October 2026).

Where they start

Map of San Juan, Puerto Rico: Old San Juan in the west, Balneario El Escambrón on the Atlantic shore to the east, and Playita del Condado and the Condado Lagoon across the water from it
All of the snorkels in the table start at Balneario El Escambrón or the Condado Lagoon.

Before you go in

  • Tell the guide if anyone in your group cannot swim. A life vest keeps you up, but the guide plans around it.
  • Practise in the shallows. Breathe slowly through the snorkel with your face in the water while you can still stand.
  • Fit the mask before you swim off: hair under the seal lets water in. Prescription glasses do not fit under a mask; contact lenses do.
  • Check the health notes. The listings warn people with heart or back problems, and pregnant women, off several of these tours, and Try Scuba Diving - San Juan's first dive comes with the advice not to fly within 12 hours of it.
  • Float, do not chase. Turtles come up to breathe and pass by; you watch from the side. See the turtle rules.
